Wisdom Tooth Removal in Murrieta
One sore tooth or all four, handled in a single calm visit.
When a third molar has no room to come in, it aches, traps food, and quietly puts the healthy molar in front of it at risk. I remove impacted and erupted wisdom teeth here at our Date Street office, with sedation if you want it, a price you hear before we start, and aftercare you can actually follow.
Third Molars, Plainly Explained
What Wisdom Teeth Are, and When They Have to Go
Your wisdom teeth are the third molars at the very back of the jaw, and they show up last, usually somewhere between 17 and 25. By that age the jaw has finished growing. For plenty of people there is simply no room left, and that is where the problems start.
A tooth that cannot break all the way through is called impacted. It sits wedged against bone or against the second molar in front of it, and that trapped position is what leads to pain, infection, cysts, and decay on the healthy neighbor. Even wisdom teeth that come in straight sit so far back that a toothbrush never really reaches them, so cavities and gum inflammation follow a few years later.
The reassuring part is that this is routine work. I have been removing wisdom teeth since my Navy years, and I do both simple and surgical extractions right here in the office, with sedation available if the thought of it makes you tense. The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons notes that taking problem third molars out earlier, before the roots finish forming, generally means a simpler procedure and an easier recovery.

It Starts With the X-Ray
Before I touch anything, a panoramic X-ray shows me how each tooth is sitting: its angle, the shape of the roots, and how close it runs to the nerve in the lower jaw. That one image is what lets me plan an impacted extraction that protects both the nerve and the molar next door. It is also why I will not quote a surgical case sight unseen.
When Removal Is Recommended
Signs Your Wisdom Teeth Need to Come Out
Not every wisdom tooth has to go. But when patients call us about one, it is almost always for a reason on this list, and any of them is worth an evaluation.
Pain or pressure in the back
An ache, a throb, or a dull feeling of pressure behind the last molar. It is the most common first symptom and the one people put up with longest.
Swollen, tender gums
A red flap of gum over a half-erupted tooth traps food and bacteria underneath. It bleeds when you brush and it does not settle down on its own.
Infections that keep returning
Recurring soreness, a bad taste, or pus around the tooth means bacteria have found a pocket that antibiotics can quiet but never clear for good.
Crowding or shifting teeth
A wisdom tooth pressing forward can undo orthodontic work you spent two years and real money on.
A jaw that will not open
Inflammation around an impacted tooth can make it stiff or painful to open your mouth all the way. Patients often notice it while yawning.
Decay you cannot reach
Teeth this far back are hard to brush and nearly impossible to floss properly, so cavities build up fast and usually go unnoticed until they hurt.
Knowing What You Are Dealing With
Types of Wisdom Tooth Impaction
How the tooth is sitting decides how involved the extraction will be, and the difference between the first row of this table and the last row is substantial. Your X-ray tells me which one you have.
| Type | What it means | Typical complexity |
|---|---|---|
| Erupted | Fully through the gum and visible | Simple extraction |
| Soft tissue | Through the bone but still covered by gum | Minor surgical |
| Partial bony | Partly trapped in the jawbone | Surgical |
| Full bony | Completely encased in bone | Most surgical |
| Mesial or angular | Tilted forward into the neighboring molar | Surgical, usually sectioned |
With a full bony or sharply tilted tooth I will usually section it, which means dividing the tooth into two or three pieces so each piece lifts out through a smaller opening. Patients hear that and wince, but sectioning is the gentler option: less pressure on the bone, a smaller site, and faster healing than levering a whole tooth out in one piece. Cases that need more are coordinated through our oral surgery care. The ADA's MouthHealthy page is a good plain-English read on why impacted teeth need attention on a schedule rather than whenever it gets bad enough.
What to Expect
The Extraction, Step by Step
One simple extraction takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Four impacted teeth run closer to an hour. Either way, this is the path from the chair to the front desk.
1Consultation and X-ray
The panoramic X-ray maps every tooth, its roots, and the nearby nerve, so the plan is settled before we begin.
2Comfort and anesthesia
The area is numbed with local anesthetic. If you would rather sleep through it, sedation is ready.
3Gentle removal
The tooth is loosened and lifted out, sectioned into pieces first if it is impacted, for an easier exit.
4Cleaning and sutures
The socket is cleaned and dissolvable stitches go in when the gum needs help closing.
5Gauze and the clot
You bite on gauze to form the blood clot that protects the socket, which is the most important part of healing.
6Aftercare and home
You leave with written instructions, a direct number to reach us, and a plan for the next 48 hours.
Nervous About Surgery? Most People Are.
You are in normal company. A good share of my extraction patients tell me afterward that they dreaded it for weeks and then found the appointment unremarkable. Ask about sedation dentistry at your consultation. For anxious patients and for longer surgical cases, it is the difference between gripping the armrests and barely remembering the visit.
Healing the Right Way
Recovery and Aftercare
Most patients feel much better within three to four days. Swelling peaks around day two, then fades a little more each morning. These are the habits that make the biggest difference to how the week goes.
What Normal Healing Looks Like
A little oozing, some puffiness, and a stiff jaw are all expected in the first two days. What is not expected is pain that climbs instead of easing, a fever, or swelling that keeps spreading into the neck. Those are phone-call symptoms, not wait-and-see symptoms. The Cleveland Clinic has a useful day-by-day rundown if you like knowing what is coming.

Wisdom Tooth Removal Cost in Murrieta
Cost comes down to how the tooth is sitting. A simple erupted extraction is nothing like a full bony impaction, so quoting a surgical case over the phone would just be a guess dressed up as a number. We confirm your wisdom tooth removal cost after the X-ray shows exactly what we are working with.

Experience That Puts You at Ease
Why Choose Promenade Dental Care
Oral surgery is where experience and a steady hand earn their keep, and where a calm voice in the room matters more than most people expect.
I graduated from the UCLA School of Dentistry and spent ten years as a United States Navy dentist, including an Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency at Camp Pendleton and deployments to Kuwait and Iraq. Field dentistry teaches you to work efficiently, with what you have, on patients who are already having a bad week. I have been caring for Murrieta families since 2010, and if my team had to name one thing I am known for, it would be getting genuinely anxious patients to relax in the chair.

Good to Know
Wisdom Tooth Removal FAQs
Do all wisdom teeth need to be removed?
No. A wisdom tooth that is fully erupted, upright, healthy, and easy to brush can stay right where it is. Removal is recommended when the tooth is impacted, pushing on the molar in front of it, causing pain or repeat infections, or sitting so far back that you cannot keep it clean. At Promenade Dental Care in Murrieta, Dr. Bao Nguyen decides tooth by tooth from a panoramic X-ray instead of applying one rule to everyone.
Does wisdom tooth removal hurt?
The extraction itself does not hurt, because the area is completely numb before anything starts. Sedation is available if you are anxious or the tooth is impacted. Afterward, most patients describe mild to moderate soreness for two to three days, handled with ibuprofen or a prescription when the case was surgical. Pain that climbs after day three instead of easing is worth a call to (951) 412-0127.
How long is recovery after wisdom teeth removal?
Most patients feel much better within three to four days and are fully healed in one to two weeks. Swelling peaks on day two or three, then eases a little every morning after that. The gum closes first; the bone underneath fills in quietly over the next few months, which you will not feel happening.
What is dry socket, and how do I avoid it?
Dry socket is what happens when the blood clot protecting the socket comes loose before the site heals, leaving bone exposed and causing a deep throbbing ache three to five days after surgery. You avoid it by not using straws, not smoking, not spitting hard, and not rinsing forcefully for the first few days. If it does happen, we treat it in a short visit with a medicated dressing and the pain settles fast.
How much does wisdom tooth removal cost in Murrieta?
Simple wisdom tooth extractions at Promenade Dental Care start at $250 per tooth. Impacted and surgical removals are quoted after a panoramic X-ray shows the tooth angle, root shape, and nerve position, because those three things decide how involved the extraction is. Most PPO plans cover part of an extraction, CareCredit financing is available, and new patients can start with a $20 exam. Call (951) 412-0127 for a quote.
Can I be sedated for wisdom teeth removal?
Yes. Promenade Dental Care offers sedation for wisdom tooth extractions, and it is a common choice for anxious patients and for impacted teeth. If you are sedated you will need to stop eating for the window we give you beforehand and have an adult drive you home. We go through all of it at the consultation so nothing catches you off guard.
Can I drive myself home after the extraction?
Yes, if the tooth is removed with local anesthetic only. Your lip and tongue will be numb for a few hours, but you are safe to drive. If you choose sedation, an adult needs to drive you home and stay with you for the rest of the day, so arrange that before the appointment.
How soon can I go back to work or school?
Most patients return to light work or school one to two days after a simple extraction, and three to four days after a surgical one. Plan on two quiet days if all four impacted teeth come out in one appointment. Hold off on the gym, running, and heavy lifting for about a week, since a raised heart rate can restart the bleeding.
Is it better to remove all four wisdom teeth at once?
For most patients, yes: one appointment, one round of anesthesia, and one recovery instead of two or three. It depends on how the teeth are sitting and on your health history, so Dr. Bao reviews the X-ray with you and recommends taking all four together or splitting them into stages, whichever is safer and easier on you.
What can I eat after wisdom tooth removal?
Soft, cool foods for the first day or two: yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, smoothies eaten with a spoon, and lukewarm soup. Skip straws, chips, nuts, popcorn, and anything hot until the site starts to close, and chew on the opposite side of your mouth. Most patients are back on a normal diet within a week.
At what age should wisdom teeth be removed?
There is no single right age, but the late teens and early twenties are usually the easiest window, because the roots are not fully formed yet and the bone is more forgiving. Adults in their thirties, forties, and beyond have wisdom teeth removed routinely as well. The X-ray, not your birthday, tells us how involved the extraction will be.
Do you take my insurance for wisdom tooth removal?
Promenade Dental Care accepts all PPO dental plans and is in-network with Delta Dental PPO, Cigna, MetLife, Guardian, Aetna, and United Concordia. Most of those plans pay a share of an extraction. We verify your benefits and tell you your out-of-pocket cost before treatment starts, and CareCredit financing is available if you would rather spread the cost out.
